Research Focus

Institutional change to advance implementation science

My research program is focused on understanding the institutions that drive continuity and change in health systems, in order to better design policies and programs that catalyze meaningful changes in population health and health care. In this way, my research program is focused on advancing implementation science by bringing interdisciplinary perspectives to bear on health system change. Underlying the current design and delivery of health care are regulative stipulations (e.g., policies such as professional scopes of practice), normative beliefs (e.g., patients should be involved in health system planning), and cultural-cognitive modes of practice (e.g., assumptions about how professions relate to each other). In order to study these elements of health system planning and delivery, I complete qualitative studies in three distinct substantive health system areas: integrated models of health care, the use of virtual care technologies, and changes in prescribing practices of potentially inappropriate medicines. Drawing on a range of qualitative methodologies and expertise in comparative health system analysis, my work seeks to contribute both practical and theoretical advancements to health services and policy research.

Through my work at the Women’s College Hospital Institute for Health System Solutions and Virtual Care (WIHV), VHA Home Health Care, and the North American Observatory of Health Systems and Policies, I maintain collaborations with health system decision-makers to promote the use of best evidence in the health system. These collaborations take a variety of forms, including research collaborations and co-hosting symposia on key policy topics to inform policymaking.
