New technologies are changing the delivery of health care. IHPME researchers are seeking to design, evaluate and use health informatics capabilities to better manage information and improve patient outcomes, through the use of electronic patient records, tele-health, mHealth, and web-based information and decision tools.

Faculty research interests include interdisciplinary collaborative research to tackle major issues around the design, development, evaluation and use of electronic health solutions in consumer, ambulatory and acute-care sectors.

Current Research Interests and Affiliations

IHPME faculty associated with the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation engage in collaborative, trans-disciplinary efforts to ensure that people, regardless of who or where they are, are able to access the information and services they need to maintain the highest levels of health. Emily Seto, Academic & HSR Faculty Lead – Health Informatics Research, bridges multiple consumer eHealth projects between the Institute and the Centre.

eHealth at IHPME includes partnership work with Cancer Care Ontario, where Omid Shabestari works to make local and relevant data-driven information available at the point of care, to enable clinicians to make individualized and informed decisions.

The Master of Health Informatics program is affiliated with the Faculty of Information (iSchool) at UofT, cross-collaborating amongst instructors and students in the approach to communication complexities inherent to the field.

IHPME increased focus on the area of big in the past year, adding a course on the subject by David Henry, and a hands-on big data analytics course.
